Syria: Where women can have multiple husbands, too.
Yeah, that Syria. Axis of Evil? Naughty go-between for Hezbullah and Iran?
Now, in Syria, women enjoy the same status men do, and can marry more than once. At least, according to this Muslim WakeUp! article:
Yet there's power in having options. And the option that's at the core of feminism -- the right to have a public voice, to work where and how you can, to be free of oppression based on wearing a bra -- is lacking for many of these women. It's a basic, fundamental human right, in my mind.
Being able to take another husband is a step. It's good to see ulema hew to the real meaning of Mohammad's words, and not just the sexist interpretations that have grown up like weeds, choking a religion that started as very respectful of women. Yet it's only leverage against public power, not actual power in the public sphere. That's something to keep in mind as these things move forward.
I recommend the entire article, which goes into depth as to the reasons for this law, and it's effects in the culture. If you don't know a lot about the situation, I think it would be an eye-opener. :) For example, a portion is about sex in marriage, and does not shy away from the difficulties there, nor the rights of women to actually enjoy sex in marriage. As a friend likes to say, "Yes!"
Now, in Syria, women enjoy the same status men do, and can marry more than once. At least, according to this Muslim WakeUp! article:
The preservation of nasl, or paternity, is cited as the reason why the Quranic verse allowing polygamy for men cannot be assumed to apply in both directions. This has always posed an interpretive problem, since Quranic commandments phrased in the male gender case are not generally assumed to apply exclusively to men. [...]Sadly, although it aids in some of the issues women have in countriers where they are second-class citizens, it also underlines those same issues:
With enhanced DNA testing now making it possible for paternity to be determined non-invasively from the moment of conception, in a process accessible to everyone in this socialist state, where all health care services are considered a universal human right, ulema in the small, Muslim-majority country are relieved to be able to extend the blessing of polygamy to women. The secular government has not played a role in devising the fatwa, but a representative of family court says such marriages will be recognized.
Rumor had it, he'd married two women in Saudi, a Moroccan and a Somali. Whenever she sent word asking for a divorce, he'd wire money, along with the words "Baby, don't go." So Um Wisal had no case for divorce on the grounds of non-support, plus the words made her remember his charms. "That was our song," she says, pulling the edge of her veil over her mouth to hide a smile. "Maybe he'll come back some day, and we'll have us some more good times." She puts her hand on her ample hip and says, "But I wanted a man by my side. A woman needs support in this world. I wanted the weight of a man."Understand. I would never say that Western-style feminism is the answer for anyone's life; it's your life, and you should live it as you like, so long as you're not harming others.
She found one, in the hefty shape of a truck driver from Ifrin, Farris al-Youm. Her husband's clan was furious. They tried to take the children, but she wasn't divorced from their son, so they couldn't. "I'm halal married," she says triumphantly.
Yet there's power in having options. And the option that's at the core of feminism -- the right to have a public voice, to work where and how you can, to be free of oppression based on wearing a bra -- is lacking for many of these women. It's a basic, fundamental human right, in my mind.

This is so un-Islamic that it's not even funny. But consider the people who were spoken to in that article, it's not surprising that this is going on there.
This is the problem, instead of the Muslims correcting themselves to following Islam, they rather do whatever they want and try to find ways to make their desires Islamically correct.
And MuslimWake is a garbage website anyway. Try allaahuabkar.net ;)
If that is un-islamic, is it un-christian to say that Jesus loved the Magdalene greatly and respected her wisdom, or that he had the message that we can all heal the sick and raise the dead? The CHURCH would say it is, but Christians who read our history (an it is out there thanks to some schollars of Greek,Latin and tribal writings translating and having the balls to publish in the face of the power of institutional religion) know that all that is true and much more was lost about the one know as the Son of God, I submit that the one know as God's Prophet was far wiser and aware than the men who followed him and were charged with passing on his word.
